Great tit's
Back to the tits later, it was just a Sun type attractor headline.
Had a trip out again today, playing catch up and still hoping to get something on the bait test.
Took along an acquaintance from Lincoln whom I picked on the way through. He has very kindly restocked me with a good quantity of garlic Spam in lieu of fuel.
A different part of the middle Trent today, we fished the last 5 hours of daylight because of a dawn to dusk rule.
Well I say daylight because it really wasn't that bright, an almost straight down the river wind that was gusting and turning, and when the rain came pushed it straight into my face, not particularly handy with my glasses needing constant wiping...as well as my nose, it was cold rain.
Tried the bait on test for the whole time, pellets paste and boilies, with and without the matching dip. Not a nibble I'm afraid.
To cover myself, just in case the bait is not all that it is made up to be, I took along my old Bruce &Walker Mark 4 and my Purist ll for a bit of chubbing, bread, cheese and Spam again, not a touch.
Both of us failed, but hope to be out again on Friday.
Great Tits
It looks like our last years successful pair are back again to the use the same nest box, no sign of nesting materials building up yet, it must be just a tad too early, but they are in and out and defending the box from all comers be they sparrow or blue/coal tits.
A very noticeable attention to the entrance, some customising going on around the hole. I have seen this before, it must be something they do to claim ownership. I'll have to check that out.
Whilst on the subject of birds we have been invaded over the last week or so, by 15 female pheasants they all come in together from the field have a peck and scratch around and all leave together. Not much shooting this year, so if they dodge the cars potentially a good year. We've had two males at different times but our colourful Chinese friend of the last few years is not to be seen.
The feeders are attracting greenfinch in good numbers, a couple of dodgy years where bodies and suffering birds have been found in the garden. Hopefully they will recover their numbers this year.
Joke
I get dozens and dozens of jokes( and other stuff!!) in my emails but this one did give me a good chuckle.
Irish ballerina
A large woman, wearing a sleeveless sundress, walked into a bar in Dublin.
She raised her right arm, revealing a huge, hairy armpit as she pointed to all the people sitting at the bar and asked,
"What man here will buy a woman a drink?"
The bar went silent as the patrons tried to ignore her. But down at the end of the bar, an owl-eyed drunk slammed his hand down on the counter and bellowed, "Give the ballerina a drink!"
The bartender poured the drink, and the woman chugged it down. She turned to the patrons and again pointed around at all of them, revealing the same hairy armpit, and asked, "What man here will buy a lady another drink?" Once again, the same little drunk slapped his money down on the bar and said,
"Give the ballerina another drink!"
The bartender approached the little drunk and said, "Tell me, Paddy, it's your business if you want to buy the lady a drink, but why do you keep calling her the ballerina?"

At last!
About time too
I actually got myself out today for about 4 hours on the Trent at Lady Pit Farm.
Arrived about 12:30, 3 other guys fishing no sign of fish though, but it was a cracking day weather wise, so I thought we'll have a go and wandered up to the weirpool.
There was a fella fishing in the pool, he said it was "a crap day", but he'd had a chub of about 5lb early on.....not crap in my mind, but I think he meant the wind,it was coming straight downstream and where he was camped it was blowing a hoolie!!
At my age comfort came into mind, so I dropped down into the run off behind a crack willow.
It was well and truly cracked, most of it was on the ground. It made a nice wind break though.
Anyway I fished with some bait sent to me for testing by an advertiser, not by me of course but one of the BS experts. So I thought I would take advantage of it, just in case there's a story to be had.
The just in case, was that I hoped I could get a quick review in Barbel Fisher as I'm in the process of finishing it off so the members can get it about the 15th March for the river anglers to read in the "Close"
Alas no review as I blanked, not a fishy nod on the rod on the clear low Trent.
Still, my first time out on a river since mid-September, so it was good to be out in the fresh air.
We have to be off by dusk, and I was the last one off at about 5:45 for the hour drive home and quiz night in the White Hart.
I had to go past the usual 4 pints,(arm firmly up my back) because Mick the landlord had put two more on as 3 of the 4 real ales he had on offer had finished!
Only got the one in though, the missus had had her fill of G&T's!!
I may pop in tomorrow lunch time to see what I missed!!
As Barbel Fisher has to be at the printers on 1st March, there's still a chance to bait test, so I think, now I've got the bug back, a day or two on the tidal calls early next week.
I'll leave the weekend to the workers!
Should have gone
Had a day at the Ricoh arena Coventry at the last weekend Carp and Coarse Fishing Show.
I "volunteered" to help run a table for the Saturday for the Barbel Society with Rich Frampton.
Our friends at Free Spirit had space to spare and you can't turn down freebies, can you, even with short notice!
Anyway I had been booked to do that specific day on the Itchen, but the journey of 9 hours there and back especially in my then fishing frame of mind of a fortnight ago, it took second place.
Back to the show, we took the opportunity to give an early push to this years Barbel Show and there were plenty of willing takers of the leaflets when John Wilson was mentioned as the main speaker.
We were very busy for the period up to about lunchtime in the afternoon it tailed off. Much the same on Sunday I'm told.
Not certain that shows offered free of charge to the punters really attract the individual the organisers are looking for, or it could be that folk just don't have the money!
Silly Season
I see even with a fortnight to go the usual forum stuff about the "Close Season" are up and running, never mind I think I've said enough over the years so I'll duck out of this seasons

New pub sign ?
And very good it is too !
Off the menu: The pump plate for Top Totty beer, which was banned from Parliament's bars after a complaint from Labour shadow minister Kate Green
Despite never having even seen the pump in question – and the bar not receiving a single complaint – Miss Green yesterday stood up in the Commons chamber to demand it be removed from sale.
Last night, however, her stance provoked a backlash from men and women alike who branded her 'humourless' and criticised her 'knee-jerk puritanism'. Slater's Ales, meanwhile, the ale's family-run Staffordshire brewery, said the outcry had seen its orders double.
The £2.70-a-pint beer was banned from the Strangers' Bar, where MPs can take guests, within an hour of Miss Green's complaint. Leader of the House Sir George Young intervened to rid Parliament of what he called 'offensive pictures'.
Miss Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston in Greater Manchester, brought up the issue at business questions in the Commons, where she called for a debate in the House on 'dignity at work in Parliament'.
